  今朝はミゾレが降りました。ノースバンクーバーでは雪が降っていたそうです。 昨日、家に帰る途中ピンクの木蓮を見つけました。 It was sleeting this morning.  I heard it was snowing in North Vancouver. I found this pink magonolia on the way home yesterday.  

バンクーバーは27日連続の長雨でした。最高記録である1953年の28日連続の記録を更新することが出来ず、気象台の方はきっと残念がったでしょうね。晴れた日曜日、スタンレーパークのロストラグーンに散歩に出かけました。池の周りの木が倒れていました。根元にはビーバーくんの歯形がありました。ビーバーくん、この木を持ち帰るの断念したのでしょうか。それともまた帰ってくるんでしょうか。ビーバーくん、見た事がないので一度見てみたいです。 翌日からまた雨が降り始めました(ToT)。 Vancouver had 27 consecutive days of rain. 先日、オリーブ１パック買ったら、容器はとうもろこしから出来ていて、コンポスト（堆肥）できると書いてあった。すごい！世界中のプラスチック容器がコンポストに出来たらいいのに。 I bought a pack of olives the other day and the container said it is made out of corn and is compostable. Sugoi! I wish all the plastic containers in the world are compostable.

母が今朝、送ってくれた写真です。もういなくなっちゃったようです。南に飛び渡るそうです。カンクンとかで、ガアガアやってるんでしょうかね〜。 This is the photo my mum sent me this morning. It looks like they are all gone now. Apparently they fly further south. I imagine they are honking in Cankun or somewhere.

Snow geeceとは白雁（ハクガン）のこと。この時期、シベリアのウランゲリ島からバンクーバー南部のリッチモンドやラドナーへ渡ってくるそうです。長い飛行距離です。母が写真を送ってきてくれました。 Snow geese are Hakugan (haku=white, gan=geese) in Japanese. 最近バンクーバーは雨続き。晴れ間に散歩に出かけて、このアザミを見つけました。アザミはスコットランドの国花なんです。このアザミは「ルリタマアザミ」というそうで、英語では「Globe Thistle（球型アザミ？）」だそうです。 It has been raining all the time in Vancouver recently. うちのジャガイモ大きくなってきました。ネットでジャガイモのことを調べてみる。 じゃがいもは３８０年前にオランダ人との貿易が許されていた長崎にやってきた。インドネシアのジャガタラ（現ジャカルタ）港から輸入されたのでジャガイモと呼ばれるようになった。ジャガイモはビタミンCが豊富。ジャガイモは船上での貯蔵食に最適なので、１７世紀の初めの大航海時代に世界中に広がった。 Our potatoes are growing bigger. ハナミズキ（英語名：ドッグウッド）がここブリティッシュコロンビア州の州花だと思っていたら、厳密に言うとセイガンヤマボウシ（英語名：パシフィックドッグウッド）のことだった。ここで見れます。ドッグウッドは犬の皮膚病に使われたところからそう呼ばれるらしい。ハナミズキにも色々な種類があって、私が最近見たのは： I thought dogwood is British Columbia’s provintial flower, but specifically speaking, it’s Pacific Dogwood. Columbineの日本語名は苧環（おだまき）。英語名のColumbineはラテン語の「鳩のような」という語源からきている。日本語の苧環は「玉のように巻いた麻糸」のこと。かわいい花やなぁ。 Columbine is Odamaki in Japanese. Columbine comes from Latin meaning “dovelike”. The Japanese name, Odamaki means a spool of linen thread. Very pretty flower, eh? ゆぅさんの苧環の写真! Yu-san’s columbine photo!
