Good things in Vancouver

会社のサマーパーチィの幹事を任されました。クルーズディナーという案もありましたが、予算オーバーで断念。次に思いついたのは競馬でした。バンクーバーにはPNEという遊園地があって、その隣が競馬場になっています。この競馬場にはプライベート用に貸してもらえるテント↓があります。５０人くらいだったので、テント半分貸してもらってテントレンタル料は１２５ドル（約１万円）。これにバーベキューランチ代１人３０ドル(約２５００円）加算されます。予算にあうやんっ！というとこで、サマーパーチィは競馬に決定っ。

この競馬場は子供も歓迎で、ちょうどテントのとなりには子供用遊び場もあります。子供達はウマにエサをあげることもできます。パーティにきた同僚の子供達は結構楽しんでいるようでした。子供達用に持っていったシャボン玉やタトゥシールも好評でした。

私とハニーは競馬に初挑戦！２ドルから賭けることができます。まず、どうやって馬券を注文するのか覚えて、２ドル掛けてみました。賭けた馬が勝って１８ドルくらい儲かりました。イエイ！競馬の賭け方を覚えていって、「連勝複式」とか注文できるようになりました。この馬は若いとか、このジョッキーは前にこの馬走らせたことがあるか。。。とか色々な角度から研究しました。でも掛け金は以前２ドル。最後のレース前には勝ったお金が５０ドルくらいになっていました。ギャンブラーな私たちは最後のレース12ドル掛けました。結果、当たらず(ToT)。結局４０ドルくらい勝ちました。

競馬場ではお酒も飲めますし（はい、ワテら飲んでました〜！）、景色も素晴らしいので、天気のよい週末に行くのオススメです。金曜日の夜もやってるみたいですよ。

I was the organizer for my company’s summer party. One idea was to go to cruise dinner but this idea was over our budget. Then I came up with the idea of horse racing. There’s a horse racing track next to PNE which is an amusement park. The racetrack has a marquee tent ↑which you can rent for your private use. We were 50 of us, so we rented half of the tent and the rental fee was $125. Plus you need to pay for the BBQ lunch which was $30 per person. This is within out budget! We decided to go horse racing.

Children are welcome at the racetrack and there is a small park next to the marquee tent. Children can feed horses as well. My colleagues’ kids who came to our party looked they were enjoying themselves. Bubbles and tattoo stickers that I brought were very popular as well.

My honey and I tried to bet on horse racing for the first time! You can bet from $2. First we learnt how to buy betting tickets and we bet $2. The horse we bet won the race and we got about $18. Yey! We learnt more about how to bet on horses and we were able to bet like “Exactor box”. We also analyzed betting in many perspectives such as if the horse was young or if this jockey raced with this horse before … but still we kept betting around $2. Before the last race our winning money was about $50. We, the gamblers, bet 12 bucks on the last race but we didn’t win (ToT). We ended up with about $40.

You can drink at the racetrack (Yes, we were drinking!) and the view is beautiful. I recommend this for weekend outing. You can also go on Friday night.

バンクーバー美術館に勤めている友達が「FUSE」というイベントに招待してくれました。このイベントは毎月第4金曜日の夜に美術館で開催されます。常時展示会に加えて、DJやダンスのライブパフォーマンスなどが見れます。「カレーの市民」、「考える人」、「接吻」などの彫像で有名なオーギュスト・ロダンの作品展を見ました。この彫像の背景やブロンズ像がどうやって出来るのかを学ぶことが出来てよかったです。また、ロダンの愛人、カミーユ・クローデルの彫像作品も見れて嬉しかったです。彼女のことはイザベル・アジャーニが演じた「カミーユ・クローデル」というフランス映画を観て知っていました。

My friend who works for Vancouver Art Gallery invited us to go to an event called “FUSE”. This event is held on the 4th Friday night of every month at the gallery. In addition to the usual exhibitions, you can see live performances of DJs and dancers. We saw the exhibition of Auguste Rodin who is famous for his sculptures such as “The Burghers of Calais”, “The Thinker” and “The Kiss”. It was great opportunity for me to learn the back ground of these sculuptures and also how blonze sculputures are made. I was also glad to see a work of Rodin’s lover, Camille Claudel since I had seen a French film called “Camille Caludel” acted by Isabelle Adjani.

他に興味深かったアーティストはパリ在住の中国人アーティストWang Duでした。彼は雑誌、新聞、インターネットと２次元のメディアからイメージをピックアップして、３次元の彫像を作ります。

このイベントにはたくさんの人が来ていて、雰囲気もとても良かったです。このイベント、また行きたいな〜。

Another interesting artist was Wang Du who is a Chinese artist living in Paris. He makes 3D sculptures which　images are picked up from 2D media such as magazine, newspapers or the internet.

There were lots of people who came to this event and the atmosphere was great. I want to go to this event again.

サン・ピークスにマウンテンバイクをしに行きました。サン・ピークスまでは車で約５時間程。

We went mountain biking at Sun Peaks. We drove about 5 hours to get there.


 
サン・ピークスから１５分程の距離にあるへフレー湖リゾートでキャンプをしました。湖の隣だったので、カモさんがたくさんいました。その内の２羽はチビカモちゃんで、めちゃかわいかったです。写真撮りまくり。

We camped at Heffley Lake Resort which was 15 minutes away from Sun Peaks. We were just next to the lake and there were many ducks. Two of them were ducklings and they were very cute. I took many photos of them.

 
翌日、マウンテンバイクをしました。バイクとプロテクターをレンタルし、サン・ピークスの頂上へ。最初は初心者コースに挑戦しました。「なんや〜、余裕のよっちゃんや〜ん」と思っていたのはつかの間、道が険しくなってくるではありませんか。標識を見ると「難しいコース」。ぎょえ〜。私とハニーはいつの間にか道を間違っていました。その道はもっと難しくなって、バイクを降りて下ることに。リフトはその道のちょうど上にあったので、リフトに乗ってる人達は、恐る恐るバイクを動かしている私を見ていました。超ダサッ！やっとこさ、山の麓に降りて、今度は違う初心者コースに挑戦しようと、また頂上に上りました。不幸なことに、その道はとても長い上り坂でした(←写真)。さらに、その道には私たち以外、人っこ一人おりません。熊に出会うのは怖いし、蚊は群がってくるし、気分は超ブルー(ToT)。この怖い道を通り抜けて、綺麗な景色が見える所に出てこれました。神様ありがとう(←桑原和男風に）。

We went mountain biking next day. We rented bikes and protectors. We got to the top of Sun Peaks and tried beginner’s course. I thought, “It’s easy peasy Japanesey!”. In a short while, the road was getting more and more difficult. I found a sign which showed we were on a “DIFFICULT COURSE”. Doh! Somehow, my honey and I got the wrong road by mistake. The road became very difficult and I had to get off my bike. There was a lift just over the biking road and people on the lift were watching me moving my bike cautiously. Super non-cool! We managed to get to the bottom and we got to the top again to try out different beginner’s road. Unfortunately, the road was very long and uphill(↑photo). And, there was absolutely nobody on the road apart from us. I was feeling blue (ToT); scared of encountering bears and annoyed with so many mosquitoes. We finally got out of the scary road and found a nice view. Thank God!

昼食を食べるために山を降りましたが、ごはんは超マズ〜（ビールが何よりの救い）。昼食後、もう一回だけマウンテンバイクをして、キャンプ場へ戻りました。翌日、バンクーバーに帰りました。またまたハードコアな週末でしたとさ〜。へとへとっス。
We got to the bottom to have lunch and the lunch was super bad (but the beer saved us). After lunch, we did the last run and went back to our camp. We headed to Vancouver next day. It was another hardcore weekend. We were so knackered.

ペンダーアイランドへ日帰り旅行に出かけた。ペンダーアイランドにはフリスビーゴルフ用の公園がある。そこへK夫婦を含む３０人くらいのグループで行った。バンクーバーからフェリー乗り場まで車で行く。途中でフリスビーを忘れたことに気づき、取りに戻る。ボケッ！フェリー出発前ギリギリ、フェリー乗り場に到着。自転車を車から出して、フェリーに向って自転車こぎまくり。K夫婦が私達に向って「また遅刻かいな〜！」と言いたげに、にやついているのが見えた。フェリーに無事搭乗し、メインアイランドでフェリーを乗り換えし、午後１２時頃ぺンダーアイランドに着く。ペンダーアイランドは結構大きな島で面積は３４平方キロメートル。人口は約２,０００人。

We had a day trip to Pender Island. There’s a park for Frisbee golfing in Pender Island. We went there with about 30 people including Mr. & Mrs. K. We drove to the ferry terminal from Vancouver. We realized we forgot to bring our Frisbees and went back to get it. Doh! We arrived at the terminal just before the ferry left. We took our bikes out from our car and cycled frantically to the ferry. We saw Mr. & Mrs. K were grinning at us as if they wanted to say “You are late again!”. We got on the ferry and there was a transit at Mayne Island and we arrived at Pender Island around noon. Pender Island is a big island which is 34 square kilo meter. Its population is about 2,000.

フリスビーゴルフ用の公園まで10 km程自転車で行く。坂が多くて大変だった。やっとこさ、公園に着いた。

We cycled to the Frisbee golf park for about 10 km. There were so many hills on the way there, which was tough. At last we got to the park.

フリスビーゴルフをするのは初めてだった。ルールは簡単で、フリスビーでゴルフをすればよい。ゴールは写真のようなかご、または鉄の棒で、これにむけて、フリスビーを投げる。ゴルフのように１８ホールある。フリスビー片手に、ビール片手に、ゲーム開始。

It was the first time for us to play Frisbee golf. The rules are quite easy. You need to play golf with Frisbees. You throw your Frisbee towards a goal which is an iron basket like the one in photo or an iron bar. There are 18 holes like golf. We started the game with a Frisbee in one hand and a can of beer in the other hand.

結果はミスターKが７８、ミセスK８１、私８２、ハニー８３だった。ゲームが終わって、他の参加者と話す（みんな結構酔っ払っていた）。自分のスコアを告げると吹き出された。みんなスコアは５５前後らしい。私達はフリスビーゴルフ専用のフリスビーを使っていなかった。私とハニーは次回までに専用のフリスビーを購入し、練習しまくろうと誓ったのであった。専用のフリスビーはドライバー、中距離、パターと投げる距離によって種類が違う。ゴルフクラブみたい。

帰りにパブに寄って夜ご飯をみんなで食べた。最終のフェリーに乗って、家に戻ったのは午前０時３０分だった。ハードコアな日曜日だった。

As a result, Mr. K was 78, Mrs. K was 81, I was 82 and my honey was 83. We talked to the other participants after the game (everybody was pretty drunk). When we told our score they burst into laughing. Their score was around 55. We didn’t have a proper Frisbee for Frisbee golf. My honey and I swore that we will buy the proper Frisbee and practice for the next event. There are Frisbees for driver, mid range, putter depending on the length that you want to throw. It’s like golf clubs, isn’t it?

We all went to a pub to have dinner. We got on the last ferry and arrived at home around 12:30 AM. It was a hard core Sunday.

７月１日（木）はカナダの日でお休みだった。私達はBowen Islandにハイキングに出かけた。バンクーバーからフェリー乗り場のHorseshoe Bayまで車で行った。ダウンタウンを午前８時２０分に出て、約１５分で到着。フェリー乗り場に車を停めて、午前９時のフェリーに乗った。Bowen Islandに２０分後に到着した。標高756メートルのGardner山↑に登った。６時間のハイキングだった。頂上で食べたベーグルサンドは最高においしかった。ご褒美に帰りにパブに立ち寄り、ビールとナチョスをオーダー。うま〜。Bowen Islandでのハイキングは日帰り旅行に最適だった。２日経った今でも筋肉痛だけど(ToT)。　

July 1st (Thu) was Canada day and was a public holiday. We went hiking to Bowen island. We took a car to the ferry terminal, Horseshoe Bay. We left downtown at 8: 20 AM and we arrived at the terminal after 15 minutes. We parked our car at the terminal and we got on a ferry which left at 9 AM. We arrived at Bowen Island after 20 minutes. We climbed up Mount Gardner↑ which is 756 meters high. Our hiking took about 6 hours. The bagle sandwich that I had on the top of the mountain was so good. As a reward, we went to a pub on the way back and ordered a pint of beer and nachos. Yum. Hiking at Bowen Island was perfect for a day trip. 2 days have passed since the trip, but my body is still aching (ToT).
