Tokyo Tower by Lily Franky

book1[1].jpg

I read this book last weekend.  My friend lent it to me.  The book is written by the illustrator & columnist, Lily Franky (pure Japanese).  I cried so much so that my eyes were swollen next morning.  This book is about the author who was fostered by his mother, and about his mother who passed away with cancer and about his father who has lived separately from them.  Most of the story is about his past life, recollecting memories of his mother with describing Showa era in the back ground.  The style is easy to read and to understand.  I heard this book is one of the best sellers in Japan at the moment.  I get close to tears again to think his mother, who went to heaven, will be so delighted if she could read this book.

I feel this book changed me.  I had never encountered such book.  This book made me to be kind to other people.  I hope my bother and sister would read this book.

English Bay

I detoured and took pictures on the way to buying milk on Sunday morning.

Good night, and good luck、出演しているSyrianaを見てみたいと思った。

I watched the Academy awards last night.  John Stewart from the American satire news program, The Daily Show was the emcee of this year’s Academy awards.  The media was expecting his bombshell statement but there was no such statement.  I found he did the emcee very smoothly.  As for Academy awards, I was quite surprised that Crash got the Best picture award.  I am very interested in watching Good night, and good luck which was directed and acted by George Clooney, and also his other acted film, Syriana.  He is politically hot recently.

Sakura is Cherry blossoms in Japanese. Japan has no official flowers. Most people, however, consider the cherry blossom the unofficial national flower of Japan. Cherry blossoms in Vancouver started to bloom recently. According to Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival which was established by Japanese organizations, there are 36,000 cherry blossoms trees in Vancouver. It forecasted March 10th is blossom day. I am looking forward to the next week.

You can get Cherry Blossom Map here.

Archer Prewitt at Media Club

I encountered this album at Zulu Records last year. Archer Prewitt is from Kansas City Art Institute, and is a write of a comic called Sof’ Boy which is published from Drawn and Quarterly in Montreal, Canada. This album jacket is also drawn by him, his wife as a model. I like listening to his music on a sunny Sunday morning.

He came to Vancouver during his tour. It was presented by Zulu Records (what a cool record shop). The venue was Media Club which holds only about 100 people. He sang songs from the album, Wilderness and a new song. Although my heart was going to come out from my throat, I asked him to take a picture with me.

I hope he will come back again.

You can listen to his songs here. “Leaders” and “O, KY” are my favorite.

Ski Ski Ski

Even people in wheel chairs can ski. Actually this guy overtook me on the slope.

And even blind people ski. There was a guide next to him, telling him where the obstacles were.

This is me… I wish.

Ski holiday at Sun Peaks

Vancouver had had rain for 2 months and at last recently it has been sunny. The day we departed for ski holiday was also a nice colour morning.

After 5 hours of driving we came to Sun Peaks where we came last summer.

We played a board game called Torres on that night.

We had a hearty breakfast next day and went out for skiing.

We hadn’t taken a lift for ages and bit worried if we could get off without any problems.

We could get off the lift without problems. When my father saw this photo he said it looked like Zao in Japan. My mother agreed as well. I googled Zao and my photo really looked like Zao. I also learnt later that it was rime ice, which only grows on Maries firs in Japan or Pacific Silver Firs in North America.

Flying Beaver Bar & Grill

We went to a pub restaurant called Flying Beaver Bar & Grill in Richmond. The restaurant is in the south terminal of Vancouver airport. Apparently the main terminal was used to be here. This pub is just next to a seaplane company, Harbour air.

The view was nice and the food was great. We went there on Sunday and Sunday was $2 for a sleeve of beer. My mum and husbands were very happy (I was a Designated Driver(T0T)BOO).

My mum had hum & pinapple pizza.

My husband had a club sandwich.

My brother had a chicken quesadilla.

I had a tuna burger. The tuna was seared outside and raw inside, and it matched very well with red and yellow pepper salsa sauce. We are going to come back here again definetely.

I ♡ Omiyage

Omiyage means gifts or souvenirs in Japanese. My mother went to Taiwan and Japan and came back with gifts as much as she could carry. My aunt family always gives us loads of gifts. We received so many wonderful gifts again this time. I was very chuffed (not with backshot, Mrs. K) with a magazine called “Suteki Resipi (“nice recipes”) written by Harumi Kurihara. This edition’s special is “my ordinal recipes which are enjoyed in the world”. Since she published her recipe book in English, she is famous in the world. My British sister-in-law loves the book.

They gave us so many sweets and teas. Camembert cheese flavoured rice cracker and chocolate from Godiva were gone instantly after taking this photo.

I was very happy to receive the apple which was made at my grand parents’ farm.

I asked my mum to buy salted plum, but my aunt gave me the one she pickled. It’s not too salty and delicious. I put it in my husband’s lunch box as well.

The thing which seduced me was spring onion miso flavoured rice cracker. I opened it as soon as I took this picture.

The rice cracker was wrapped with the bamboo skin. Japanese wrapping culture is pretty.

Yum!

The maccha flavoured Casutera “sponge cake, speciality in Nagasaki” was delicious. Casutera has lots of honey in it and it tasted yummy.

I am pleased to receive boiled and dried baby sardines. Foreigners often get surprised to see us eating these tiny fish.

Pickled Cod roe which I was waiting for. I had it with just cooked rice. It was the moment that I was glad I was a Japanese. I gave some to my husband. His reaction was “Fishy”, “Bitter”. It was the moment that I thought I had not given it to him.

Soy sauce pickled Salmon roe. I made a rice ball with the roe inside for my lunch, and I was looking foward to have it from the morning.

This is the cap that my aunt knitted within one night. She is a master of knitting who taught me how to knit. She easily knits a mind-boggling complicated pattern. I would like to be like that.

These are from my mum. It must have been heavy to carry. Thank you.

My mum carried one other heavy thing, a rice cooker(T0T). My mum and aunt went to buy it for me(T0T). Rice tastes dangerously good!

You cannot buy Yuzu (a kind of citrus fruit) here, so I asked my mum to buy the Yuzu juice which my sister introduced me. I can use it for many recipes and you can make a good sauce if you mix it with soy sauce and “dashi” sauce.

The omiyages were in the shopping bag of a supermarket near our house. It’s much cuter than it used to be.

Thank you very much for the many omiyage.
