Evergreen Building　（日本語に訳すと「常緑ビル」かな？）はカナダで指折りの建築家、Arthur Ericksonによってデザインされた。ダウンタウンにあるオフィス用ビルで、各オフィスにバルコニーがついている。バルコニーからはノースバンクーバーの山々が見渡せる。素敵でしょ？このビルは電気会社、BC Hydroの元会長、Laxton氏が所有している。彼はこの建物に４階分増築して居住用アパートに改築するつもりだった。しかし、市がこの改築を認めなかったため、Laxton氏は、このEvergreenビルを壊して超高層ビルを建てるしか方法がないという結論に至った。OH NO!

The Evergreen building was designed by one of the best Canadian architects, Arthur Erickson. This is an office building in down town and each office has a balcony. You will be able to see mountains of North Vancouver from the balconies. Isn’t that nice? This building is owned by Mr. Laxton, ex-chairman of BC Hydro, an electric company. He wanted to renovate this building for residential purpose by adding four stories on top of the building. However, the city council didn’t approve this renovation and Mr. Laxton reached to the conclusion that a new skyscraper should be built after demolishing the Evergreen building. OH NO!

重要建築物をサポートする団体、Heritage Vancouverは、Evergreenビルを保護するために市にこの４階増築を認めるよう要請した。今や、Evergreen ビルの将来は市の手中にある。市がこの４階増築を認めることを強く切望する。

Heritage Vancouver which is an organization to support heritage buildings, requested the city council to approve the four stories addition plan to protect the Evergreen building. Now the future of the Evergreen building is in hands of the city council. I strongly urge the city council approves the four stories addition plan.

Arthur Ericksonは1924年に生まれ、バンクーバー出身！彼は大学で日本語も専攻したらしい。彼の著名な建築物は：

I didn’t know this was designed by Erickson. No wonder it’s so cool. The artificial waterfall is beautiful.

Cupcakes

親戚のお誕生日にDenman Streetにあるお店でカップケーキを買った。お店の名前はもちろん、「Cupcakes」。ウェディングケーキも作ってくれるんだって。めっちゃかわいい。

We bought some cupcakes for our relative’s birthday from a shop on Denman Street. The name of the shop is “Cupcakes”, of course. They make Wedding cakes as well. The cakes are very pretty.

Marine Building

Marine Buildingは1930年に建設され、１９３９年までバンクーバーで一番高いビルだった。Marine Buildingはアール・デコ調の装飾が美しい。飛行船なんてとっても「モダン」な絵で、ニューヨークスタイルに影響されているらしいのだ。このビルの前を通ったら、中に入って下さい。ここのサイトからでもその装飾の詳細を下見できます。

Marine building was built in 1930 and it was the tallest building until 1939. Marine Building is beautiful for its Art Deco decoration. Air Ship looks really “modern”, and apparently this building was influenced by the New York Style. If you pass this building, please go inside to have a look. You can pre-visit there from this site to look at the details of the decoration.

私のオフィスには１９１４年に撮影されたバンクーバーのパノラマ写真がある。この時はまだMarine Building は建っていなかったが、１９１４年のバンクーバーを見れる。これはホテルバンクーバーのバルコニーから撮影されたと書かれてあった。この写真は私を飽きさせません。写真をクリックすれば、大きくなります。

My office has a panorama photo of Vancouver, taken in 1914. Marine Building wasn’t built this time but you can see Vancouver in 1914. The picture said it was taken from balcony of the Hotel Vancouver. This photo never bores me. If you click the photo, it gets enlarged.

The Umbilical Cord

ありがたやぁ〜　ニッポン土産

Umbilical cord とは日本語でへその緒のこと。妊婦さんのToonieちゃんは日本からたくさんの赤ちゃんグッズをゲット。その中の一つが、赤ちゃんのへその緒用木製の小箱。

The umbilical cord is Heso no o (cord of naval) in Japanese. A pregnant lady, Tooni-chan, got lots of baby goods from Japan. One of them is a wooden box for her baby’s umbilical cord.

日本人はへその緒を取っておく。これは昔からの慣習。Toonieちゃんから分かったことなんだけど、カナダで赤ちゃんを産む場合は、ごみ箱に捨てられる前に、へその緒下さいとお医者さんか看護婦さんにリクエストしとかないといけないんだって。日本の病院はへその緒を干して渡してくれるがカナダは違う。大抵、ジップロックの袋に入れられて渡され、自分で血抜きをして、干さないといけないらしい。

Japanese people keep their own umbilical cord, which is their very old custom. I learnt from Toonie-chan that, when you have a baby in Canada, you’ve got to request doctors or nurses to keep the umbilical cord before being thrown into a bin. Japanese hospitals make the cord dried for you but not in Canada. Normally the cord will be given in a Ziploc bag and you have to get the blood out and dry it by yourself.

あるウェブサイトによると、パキスタン人とインド人はへその緒をお祈りをしながら地に埋めるようだ。エジプト人は赤ちゃんが生まれて７日目の「お七夜」に赤ちゃんが着ている服に子袋を付ける。その中には、その赤ちゃんのへその緒、穀物、お金が入っている。そして、１ヶ月経った時に、子袋をこっそりと通りに捨てて、それを偶然拾った人は幸運になるそうだ。

According to a website, Pakistanis and Indians bury the umbilical cord in the ground with chanting. Egyptians attach a little bag to clothes that a baby is wearing on the 7th night after birth. The little bag has the umbilical cord, grain, and some money inside. After one month, you throw the bag secretly to a street and the person who picked it up coincidentally gets lucky.

ミイラ化したへその緒を中に見つけて、幸運って思うかぁ？エジプト人には、「うわ、また今日、へその緒拾っちゃったよ。俺って今日はなんてラッキー！」っていう経験があったりして。ちょっとエジプト人に確認しなければ。

You think you are lucky to find a mummified umbilical cord? Egyptians may experience sometime like, “Oh, I found another umbilical cord today. Aren’t I so lucky today!” I’ve got to confirm this with Egyptians.

Pierce Brosnan 主演の泥棒映画を見た。Pierceの最近の映画では一番良かったかも。残念ですが、もう007には出ないんだよねぇ。Pierceはアイルランド出身、52歳。一人目の奥さんは結婚１１年後に子宮癌で亡くなった。２人目の奥さんは若くて美人なジャーナリスト。２０年以上もアメリカに住み、アメリカの国籍も取っている。2003年には、イギリスの女王、エリザベス２世はＯＢＥ(Order of the British Empire)という、勲章を表彰した。女王、良い選択！

Pierce Brosnan played the leading role in this thief film. This film may be the best Pierce’s film that I have seen recently. Regrettably, he is not going to be in 007 anymore. Pierce is from Ireland, 52 years old. His first wife died from ovarian cancer, after 11 years of marriage. His second wife is a young and gorgeous journalist. He has lived in the States for more than 20 years and now he’s got American nationality. In 2003, British Queen, Elizabeth II gave OBE (Order of the British Empire). Good choice, Queen!

共演してるWoody Harrelson（アメリカ人）やSalma Heyek（メキシコ人）もいい役者だ。IMDBの評価を見ると10点満点中5.9 とちょっと低いが、私は８ツ☆を進呈します!

Co-actors, Woody Harrelson (American) and Salma Heyek (Mexican) are also good actors. User rating of IMDB is 5.9 out of 10 points is little bit low but I will give 8 stars!

Pierceの1999年にRene Russoと共演した、またまた泥棒映画、The Thomas Crown Affairも良かったが、この続編、The Topkapi Affairが2006年にリリースされる。楽しみだ。

Pierce’s another thief film, The Thomas Crown Affair which acted with Rene Russo in 1991 was also good, and this films next film, The Topkapi Affair is going to be released in 2006. I am looking forward to it.

Monster Tsukushi…

リッチモンド（バンクーバーの南）に住んでいる私の母上がつくしの写真を送ってくれた。こっちのつくしは、モンスターサイズ。ヴィクトリアで見つけたとき、カナダ人の友達にこれ日本では食べるんよと教えると、「じゃ、今食べてくれ！」。料理しないと食べれません。うちの母上は大抵、佃煮にして食べさせてくれました。このつくしはでかすぎてまずいので、母上は料理しないそうです。

My mother who lives in Richmond (South of Vancouver) sent me the photo of Tsukushi. Tsukushis here are monster size. We found Tsukushi in Victoria as well and I told my friends that we eat it in Japan. They said, “Eat it now!”. You have to cook Tsukushi. My mother often makes Tsukudani (boil with soy sauce, sugar, sake) with Tsukushi. These Tsukushis are too big which normally have bad taste. So my mother is not going to cook these.

つくしは漢字で土筆。土の筆とはかわいい。英語ではHorsetail、馬のしっぽとはこれまたかわいい。

Tsukushi in kanji is “pen of soil”. pretty name. In English, Tsukushi is “Horsetail”, pretty name as well.

Prison Hotel “Winter” by Jiro Asada

元上司にお礼として、2004年ベストドキュメンタリー賞 by Chilco （←自分かよ！）に選ばれた、Touching the Void　（邦題：運命を分けたザイル）のDVDを送った。これはイギリス人登山家、サイモン・イェーツとジョー・シンプソンが1985年ペルーのアンデス山脈、標高6600ｍのシウラ・グランデ峰西壁を登った時に起こった本当の話。素晴らしい映画です。

I sent my ex boss a thank-you present. It’s a DVD, “Touching the Void” which was the best documentary award in 2004 by Chilco (←That’s me!). It’s the true story of British climbers, Simon Yates and Joe Simpson, journey up to the west face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in 1985. It’s a wonderful film.


すると上司から、浅田次郎作、プリズンホテル「冬」が送られてきた。送ったＤＶＤと登山繋がりで、日本人登山家小西政継をモデルにした人物が出てくる。ヤクザが経営するホテルで義理と人情のストーリーが展開される。人の弱さを代弁し、慰めてくれる本でした。最後はグスンときましたよ。上司曰く、浅田次郎（53歳）は子供の頃から小説家になると決めてたが40歳過ぎるまで書いても書いても売れなかった。その反動で鉄道員（ポッポ屋）が売れた後100作品以上が10年で発行されたが、当然当たり外れがある。で、上司は私に当たりだけを送ってくれるそうです。なんていい人なんだ。

Then my boss sent me this book, Prison Hotel “Winter” by Jiro Asada. Related to climbing of the DVD I sent, there’s a character in this novel was modeled on a Japanese climber, Masatsugu Konishi. At the hotel which is ran by Yakuzas, many stories of “Giri to Ninjyo” (Yakuza’s philosophy, meaning Duty and Love) progress simultaneously, the story spoke about human weakness which everybody experiences and consoled me. It gave me tears at the end. According to my boss, the writer, Jiro Asada (53 years old) decided to be a novelist when he was very small but his books didn’t get popular until he got to forties. He wrote more than 100 novels in 10 years after he wrote “Tetsudoin” which was a big hit. There are some hits and misses in the 100 novels so my boss is going to send me only the hit ones. What a nice person.

この本には他に「春」「秋」「夏」がある。読み終わると、オフィスの机の上には「夏」と「秋」が届けられていた。グッドタイミング！

There are three other books for this novel, “Spring”, “Autumn” and “Summer”. After reading this book, “Summer” and “Autumn” were delivered to my desk. Good timing!

Trip to Victoria…

友達と自転車でヴィクトリアに行くつもりだった。土曜日の朝、５時半に起きたけど、雨ざーざー降り。天気予報を調べるとヴィクトリアの降水確率は１００％。雨の中自転車をこぐほど嫌なものはない、車で行くことに決定。ヴィクトリアには午前１０時半ぐらいに到着する。天気は。。。雨降ってへんやんかぁぁぁぁ！実際、週末ずっと降らんかった。自転車で来なかったことにひどく罪深く感じた。天気予報のばかやろうぉぉぉ。

We were going to go to Victoria with friends by bike. I woke up at 5:30 am on Saturday morning but it was raining horribly. I checked the weather forecast and found the precipitation is 100% in Victoria. Nothing gets worse than cycling in the rain, so we decided to go by a car. We got to Victoria at around 10:30 am and the weather was … NOT RAINNING!Actually the whole weekend didn’t rain. We felt very guilty not cycling. Stupid weather forecast!


最初にSooke（スーク）というヴィクトリアから３０ＫＭ西にある小さな町に向った。 Quimper公園を散歩し、アザラシやかわいい鳥達を見つける。自由に散歩してるワンコ達はとてもハッピーに見えた。幸せな犬だな。

First, we headed to a small town called Sooke which is about 30 km west of Victoria. We walked round the Quimper Park and found several seals and pretty birds. Doggies looked very happy to run around freely here. Lucky dogs.



ヴィクトリアに戻ると、時刻は午後３時、パブに行く時間じゃーん！最初のパブはSpinnarkers、ここの地ビールはとても有名。私はここの２０周年記念のビール、Twentyを飲んだ。おいしくって、７％と強いビール。Antipastiを頼んだけど、これはビールのおつまみに最高、上質のオリーブ、サラミ、クリスピーなパン、アサリ、スモークサーモンなどのオードブルだった。みんなこのパブを気に入った。

We got back to Victoria and it was 3 o’clock, time to go to pubs! The first one was the Spinnakers, their own beer is very famous. I had beer called “Twenty” which is their 20th anniversary beer. It was very yummy and strong, 7% alcohol. We had Antipasti, perfect appetizer for beer drinking. It had very good olives, salamis, crispy bread, clams, smoked salmon. We really liked this place.


次のパブはSwan、ここも地ビールを作っている。フレンドリーなサービス、ごはんもまぁまぁ、ビールはウマイ。陽気になってきたところでYukunに電話する。彼は私が酔っ払っていることを推測、その推測は当たりぃ。あの夜、この酔っ払いと付き合わなくてほんとよかったですよ。その後、私を待っていたのは。。。

Next pub was The Swan, which make their beer as well. Friendly service, decent food, good beer. I was feeling pretty jolly and called Yukun. He guessed I was drunk and his guess was right. It was good that he didn’t go out with me that night. What was waiting for me afterwards was…


マニラアサリ！また他の地ビールパブ、Canoe Brewpubに行く。みんなバーガーを注文したのに、 私はマニラアサリを注文。これが悪かった。これ食べてから、キモくなる。夜が過ぎるとともに、キモさ倍増。このパブの後、飲めなくなり、夜が楽しくなくなる。(ToT)

Manilla clam! We went to another micro brewery, The Canoe Brewpub, very nice pub. Everybody ordered burgers, but I ordered Manila clam. Bad move! After eating this dish, I felt sick. As the night went, I felt sicker and sicker. After this pub, I could’t drink and didn’t enjoy the night at all. (ToT)


Sticky Wicket は別にどうってことのないパブ。Big Bad John’s はブラジャーが天井からぶらさがっていたり←、名刺がそこらじゅうにはりつけてあったりと雰囲気がユニークだった。京都にある地球屋っていう居酒屋を思い出させるパブだった。最後、Hugoはかっこつけちゃってるグラマラスなラウンジ。みんなカクテル飲んでたけど、私とミセスＫは紅茶。これもまた悪かった。その夜、カフェインにより寝られなくなる。 (TOT)

The Sticky Wicket, was an okay pub, nothing really special. Big Bad John’s had unique atmosphere, bras were on the ceiling←, people’s name card everywhere. It reminded me a pub called Chikyuya in Kyoto, Japan. Lastly, Hugo’s lounge was sassy and glamorous. Friends were drinking cocktails and Mrs. K and I were drinking tea. Bad move again. We couldn’t sleep much with caffeine that night. (TOT)

一晩中苦しんだ。今まで経験した中で一番最悪だった。次の日友達みんな結構元気そう。朝食を取りにJohn’s Placeに行くが、バリ混み。代わりにReef Restaurantに行く。ハ二−のFrittata（オムレツみたいなん）はおいしかった。ジェラシー。

I suffered all night with sickness which was the worst I had experienced before. Everybody was in decent shape next morning. We went to a breakfast diner called “John’s place” but it was packed. We had breakfast at the Reef restaurant instead. My honey’s Frittata (kind of omelets) was really good. Jealousy.

こんな気持ち悪くなりたくなかったのに、これはきっとバチが当たったんだな。

I wished I didn’t get sick this bad but maybe this was punishment.

Good things in Taiwan.

大学で仲良かった友達が今台湾に住んでいる。彼女には台湾人のマッチョマンとの間に二人のキュートな息子さんがいる。彼女は長男くんが小さい時に、彼のためにこのひらがな・カタカナ表を作った。これって愛でしょ！思いやりのあるお母さんやで。涙。

My friend from university lives in Taiwan now. She has two cute sons with a Taiwanese macho man. When the first son was little, she made this Japanese alphabet table for him. This is love! Toughtful mum. Tears.
