Good things in Vancouver

昨晩お風呂に入ろうと思うと、お風呂が泥水じゃないか！病気になりそうなので、諦めた。翌日同僚に聞いてみると、こんな泥水はダウンタウンだけらしい。が～ん。ミネラルウォーターを買いにいくと、どこも売れきれ。小さなお店でやっとみつけ、買うと１本３ドル８０セントもした。値段つりあげてるんじゃないのか！水道水を飲むことが禁止されているので、オフィスビルのスターバックスは今日は閉まっている。週末はずっと雨だし。どうなるの、バンクーバーの水。

I was going to take a bath last night but the water looked muddy!  It looked filthy – I gave up taking the bath.  I asked my colleagues next day about how filthy their water was but it seems like it’s only in downtown.  Doh.  I went to buy bottled water but it was sold out everywhere.  I found some in a corner shop but cost me $3.80 for a bottle.  I bet they raised the price.  Drinking tap water is banned, so Starbucks in my office building was closed today.  This weekend is going to be rainy.  What’s gonna happen to Vancouver water?

バンクーバー周辺では大雨で3万5千戸の家が停電です。今朝は飲み水が濁っていてびっくりしました。１１月１１日はリメンバランスデーで国民の休日でした。１１月１１日は１９１８年の第一次世界大戦の終戦日です。リメンバランスデーは第一次世界大戦で亡くなった兵士達を思い出す日として設立されましたが、今では、過去に起こった戦争全てを含みます。スタンレーパークに散歩に出かけました。公園内の水族館の近くには戦死した兵士達の記念碑があります。そこにジャパニーズカナディアンの兵士達の記念碑もあります。たくさんのお花が献花されていました。第一次世界大戦では５４人のジャパニーズカナディアンが戦死したそうです。

Due to heavy rain about 35,000 houses are out of power around Vancouver. I was surprised to find drinking water was muddy this morning. November 11th was Remembrance day and was a national holiday. November 11th was the day when the World War I ended. Remembrance day was established to remember the sacrifice of soldiers of the World War I but nowadays it includes all the wars in the past. We went for a walk to the Stanley park. Near the aquarium in the park, there are monuments of soldiers who died in the wars. One of them is the monuments for Japanese Canadians. Many flowers were offered to the deceased. During the World War I, 54 Japanese Canadian soldiers died.






リメンバランスデー近くになると、みんなポピーの花を身に付けます。このシンボルはカナダ人の軍医が書いた、「フランダースの野原で」という詩からきています。フランスのフランダースは第一次世界大戦の激戦地でした。終戦後その野原には兵士達の血を表すかのようにたくさんのポピーが咲くようになったそうです。この詞はカナダの１０ドル札に印刷されています。

When it gets closer to Remembrance day people wear poppies. This symbol comes from a poem called “In Flanders Field” which was written by a Canadian physician. Flanders in France was the worst battlefield in the World War I. After the war, many poppies grew in the field as if it expresses the blood of soldiers. This poem is printed on Canadian $10 notes.

今年のハロウィーンは友人のパーティに呼ばれました。上の写真はMr. & Mrs. Kが作ったフィンガークッキー。すごいリアル。

We were invited to a friend’s Halloween party this year. The above photo is finger cookies which Mr. & Mrs. K made. Very realistic.

右の人はカーリングをするカーラーだそうです。江川選手かと思った。
The person on the right is a curler. I thought it was a Japanese baseball player called Egawa.

パーティでは、ベストコスチューム賞を投票しましたが、私が投票したのはこのデビルです。
At the party, we voted for the best costume award. I voted for this devil.

デビルもたくさん票を得ましたが、接戦の結果、イギリスのコメディ番組、Little Britainに出てくるVickyが賞を獲得しました(左の写真で、右側に立っている人。ウソのデカ腹です。）。ちゃんと小道具まで揃えてきて、Vickyの決まり文句を話すVicky人形も連れてきていました。
The devil got many votes but after the close match, Vicky, a character in the British comedy, Little Britain got the award (the person on the right in the left photo. Fake big belly.). She prepared all the props and she also brought a Vicky doll which speaks stereotypical phrases of Vicky.

ハロウィーンにちなんだお菓子もたくさんありました。左の写真は蜘蛛。右の写真は魔女。ある友人が、これは魔女ではなくてこういう人達に見えるんだけどって言ってました。

There were many sweets which were associated with Halloween. The left photo shows spiders. The right one shows witches. One guy was saying they don’t look like witches, look like these people.

３年前に友人の家で子供達にお菓子をあげたこともありました。その時の子供達の仮装はこんな感じでした。。。

I have given sweets to kids at our friends hour three years ago. At the time, kids came in with these kind of customes…
