Columbineの日本語名は苧環（おだまき）。英語名のColumbineはラテン語の「鳩のような」という語源からきている。日本語の苧環は「玉のように巻いた麻糸」のこと。かわいい花やなぁ。
Columbine is Odamaki in Japanese. Columbine comes from Latin meaning “dovelike”. The Japanese name, Odamaki means a spool of linen thread. Very pretty flower, eh?
ダウンタウンの車線が先週塗り直されたが、ペンキ塗りたてが放置され、バンクーバーのいたずら好きの人達がタイヤの跡や、笑ける足跡を残している。
これは最近ロブソンストリートで見つけた足跡。市はこれを直すんだろうか。きっとこのままだろうなぁ。
The downtown road markings were repainted last week, but the markings were left wet for too long and mischievous people all over Vancouver left tire marks and comedy footprints.
Here are the footprints that I found recently on Robson street. I wonder if the city is going to fix this? I suppose they will be left like this.
Cloud 9というバーに行った。このバーはエンパイアランドマークホテルの４２階にある回転式展望ラウンジ。１回転、１時間２０分かかる。飲み物もリーズナブルな値段で、眺めは最高だった! 金・土曜日はピアノ演奏がある。
We went to the bar called, Cloud 9. This bar is a revolving lounge on the 42nd floor of the Empire landmark hotel on Robson street. It takes 1 hour and 20 minutes for one revolution. Drinks were reasonable price and the view was fantastic! Piano performance is held on Friday and Saturday night.

バンクーバー中央図書館は199５年に建てられた。建物の中はとても広々としていて、明るい。
この建物をデザインした建築家の一人のMoshe Safdieはイスラエル出身で、モントリオールのマクギル大学で建築を学んだ。彼のウェブサイトでは他の作品が美しい写真で見れる。モントリオールにあるHabitat 67↓という住宅プロジェクトはかっこいいなぁ。
Vancouver Central Library was built in 1995. Inside the building is very spacious and bright.
One of the architects who designed this building was Moshe Safdie. He is from Israel and studied at McGill university in Montreal. You can see his other works in his website with beautiful pictures. The residential building project called Habitat 67↓ is really cool.
オペラ作曲家プッチーニの「蝶々夫人」と「トスカ」のレコードを買った。ＣＤで買うと、フルバージョンは$50（４千円）くらいする。クラッシック専門の中古レコード屋さんに行った。レコードのフルバージョンは＄５（４百円）だった。
ミュージカル「ミス・サイゴン」は「蝶々夫人」と同じあらすじ。死に方はそれぞれ違いますがどちらも悲惨です。「トスカ」は「ロミオとジュリエット」にちょっと似てる。オペラって悲しいストーリーばっかりですねぇ。
プッチーニは結構男前です（写真）。
We bought two records “Madame Butterfly” and “Tosca” by the opera composer, Puccini. If you buy a full version on CD, it costs about $50. We went to a used record shop that specializes in classical music. A full version on record is $5.
The musical, “Miss Saigon” is the same plot as “Madame Butterfly”. The way they die is different but both ways are tragic. “Tosca” is bit like “Romeo and Juliet”. Operas are always sad stories, eh?
Puccini is quite handsome(photo).
母上がVanDusen植物園へ行って、ラバーナム（キバナフジ）の写真を送ってくれました。この植物園はもともとゴルフ場でしたが、住宅地としての再開発計画に住民が断固反対しました。住民の願い通り、１９７５年に植物園となりました。とてもピースフルな場所です。
My mother went to VanDusen Botanical garden and she sent me this photo of Laburnum. This botanical garden was originally a golf course but the local residents stood firmly against redevelopment project as residential area. As the residents wished, it became a botanical garden in 1975. It’s a very peaceful place.
今日のランチはフレンチのLe Gavrocheに行った。このレストランはワインが豊富。写真の超でかワインは５Ｌ。普通のワインは７５０ml。5Ｌのボトルは１本２,０００ドル（１６万円）するそうだ。一番高いワインは幾らかウェイターに聞くと、答えは２４,０００ドル（192万円）だった。そんなの頼む人いるんですかと聞くと、３,０００ドル（２４万円）くらいのは頼む人いるよだって。どんなおいしいワインやの？
We went to Le Gavroche for today’s lunch. This restaurant has many varieties of wine. The humongous bottle in the photo is 5 litres. Normal wine is 750 ml. Apparently, the 5 litre one is $2,000. I asked a waiter how much the most expensive one was. He said it was $24,000. I asked again if anybody ordered such expenstive wines. There are people who order wines around $3,000, he said. I wonder how good the wines taste?
前菜は（山羊のミルクから出来ている）ゴートチーズとみかんのサラダ。マスタードドレッシングがかかっていた。
Hors D’oevres was a salad with goat cheese and tangerine. It was mixed in with mustard dressing.
メインコースはラムチョップとマッシュドポテト。
The main course was lamb chop and mashed potato.
デザートは洋ナシのコンポート、スティルトンチーズ詰め。スティルトンチーズはイングランドの青チーズ。洋ナシのコンポートとよく味があっていた。考えた人、天才！
The dessert was pear comport, stuffed with stilton cheese. Stilton cheese is blue cheese from England. It matched with the taste of the pear comport. It was genius who came up with this one!

今日は母の日。日本とカナダは同じ日だけど、イギリスではイースターの一週間前らしい、今年は３月６日だった。今日は母とランチを食べに行った。
Today is mother’s day. Canadian mother’s day is the same date as Japanese, but British one is one week before the Easter, which was March 6th this year. I went to lunch with my mother today.
ハ二−の又従妹の家にも行った。お家は1897年築で、伝統的建設物に指定されている。かっちょいい。ずっと昔はお店屋さんだったらしい。何のお店だったんだろう。

We went to my honey’s second cousin’s house as well. The house was built in 1897, and is a heritage building. Cool. It used to be a shop a long time ago. I wonder what kind of shop it was.
During chatting, we came to a topic about jams and chutneys that she gave us before.
They were;
Tomato chutney・・・with curry!
Apricot jam ・・・on buttered toast!
Brandied nectarines・・・with vanilla ice cream!
Red pepper jelly・・・with tuna sandwich!
She said she had some stock and gave us all the kinds again. Lucky me!!!

Who threw these shoes?
Franz Ferdinandはスコットランド、グラスゴー出身のバンド。みんなアートスクールの出身。女の子を踊らせる音楽を創りたいと２００１年に結成された。去年はイギリスのBrit Award（アメリカで言うグラミー賞）のBritish Rock Act賞とBritish Group賞を２つも獲得し、今やスーパースター。David Bowie様はニューヨークでのライブに駆けつけたそうだ。去年、バンクーバーでのライブに行ったが、非常にかっこよかった。音楽も大好き。ここで試聴できるよ。
Franz Ferdinand is a band from Glasgow in Scotland. Everybody graduted from an art achool. They made this band in 2001 to create music to let chicks dance. Last year they received 2 Brit Awards (similar to American Grammy Award), British Rock Act Award and British Group Award, and now they are superstars. Apparently David Bowie went to their live in New York. We went to their live concert in Vancouver last year, and they were soooo cooool. I love their music. You can listen to the music here.
今朝、時間を読み違えていた。家を一緒に出るのにハニーを散々急がせ、会社にも、「すいません、３０分遅れます。」とメイルを入れた。会社に来ると、な〜んか８時半出勤の人しかいない。この時、私的には９時半だったんです。他の同僚が到着する。「なんやみんな、今日は遅いなぁ。」と思いつつ、仕事してた。で、同僚が、「チルコ、お前なんで、３０分遅れるっていうメイル出してんの？君、８時３０分に来たやん。」
「何言うてんねんな。。。」と思いつつ、時計を見ると午前９時だった！
「げっ！１時間、間違えてた！」と言うと、みんな爆笑。私、赤面！ボケボケ！
ハニーに謝りの電話を入れた。
I misread the time this morning. I gave my honey a hard time to hurry to leave the house together, and I e-mailed my office saying, “Sorry, I will be late for half an hour.” When I got to the office, somehow there are only few staffs who start working from 8:30 am. At this time, I thought it was 9:30 am. Other staffs arrived. I thought, “Oh, everybody is late today.” and started to work. Then one staff said, “Chilco, why did you send an e-mail saying you were going to be late for 30 minutes? You arrived at half past eight.”
I thought, “What the heck is he talking about?” and looked at my watch and found it was 9 am!
“Doh! I misread the time for one hour!”, as soon as I said this, everybody pissed themselves. I got blushed. Stupid of me!
I called my honey to say sorry.
母が突然、「リス！すごい大きいリス！」と言った。
そのリスはかなり強そうだった。
My mother said suddenly, “Squirrel. It’s a huge squirrel!”
The squirrel looked quite mighty.
スコットランドの大学に在学中、ある男の子に会った。彼はイングランド人だった。彼の名前を訊いた、彼は「僕の名前はリス」と答えた。私は「あの動物のリスのこと言ってるん？」と尋ねると、彼は「そう、僕の両親、昔ヒッピーだったんだ。。。」と過去に何回もそう答えたかのように言った。
I met a guy when I was studying at a Scottish university. He was an English. I asked his name and he answered, “My name is Squirrel.” I said “You mean Squirrel as in animals?” He said, “Yes, my parents were aging hippies…”. He said it as if he answered like this too many times in the past.
今日はセミナーに初めて行った。朝ごはん、ウマかった。
I went to a seminar for the first time today. The breakfast was good.
