土曜日は雨が降り、山には雪が降っていた。明日はバレンタインデーだ♪
It rained on Saturday and it snowed on the mountains. Tomorrow is Valentine’s day♪
バンクーバーにはとってもイカすレコード＆ＣＤ屋がある。その名はZulu Records。内装はミッドセンチュリーで試聴ブースがたくさんある。私のお気に入りのブースはスタッフのお薦めコーナー。２５枚くらいのお薦めＣＤがある。私はそこに座って余裕で1時間ほどＣＤを聴く。先日このＣＤをそこから選び、即、気に入ってしまった。ＣＤを買った時、お店の人がこの人バンクーバーで３月ライブやるけどチケットあるよって。よっしゃ！ＣＤとチケット2枚買う。
買ったＣＤは”Antony and the Johnsons”の”I am a bird now”(↑フロントカバー）。シンガーのAntonyは白人男性だが、黒人女性のような美しい声を持っている。彼はイギリスで生まれて、オランダに数年住み、1990年からニューヨークに住んでいる。現在３４歳。Lou Reed, Rufus Wainright, Boy Georgeは彼のファンでこのＣＤでも歌っている。AntonyはRufusのニューアルバム”Want Two” （このアルバムも最高！）の”Old Whore’s Diet”を歌っている。Lou Reedの”The Raven”というアルバムにも参加している。このアルバムを聞いてみたい。
彼の音楽は哀しく美しい。３月のライブが待てない。
There is a cool record & CD shop in Vancouver. The name is Zulu Records. The interior is mid-century and there are lots of listening booths. My favorite booth is the staff picks’ corner. There are normally about 25 staff picked CDs. I can sit there and listen to the CDs for an hour easily. I picked this CD from there the other day and I liked it instantly. When I bought the CD the shop staff told me they sell tickets for this artist’s live in March in Vancouver. Wicked! I bought the CD and two tickets.
The CD I bought was called “I am a bird now” by “Antony and the Johnsons”(↑Front cover). The singer, Antony, is a Caucasian man but has beautiful voice, kind of black female voice. He was born in England, spent several years in Holland and came to New York in 1990. He is 34 years old now. Lou Reed, Rufus Wainright, Boy George are big fans of this singer and they all sang in this CD. Antony sang the song called “Old Whore’s Diet” in Rufus’s new album “Want two” as well (It’s a great album too!). He also appears in Lou Reed’s album, “The Raven”, which I love to listen to.
His music is sorrowful and beautiful. I cannot wait for the live in March.
今日は会社を休んでハ二‐と車を運転試験場に連れて行った。カナダでは自分の車を試験場に持ち込むが、運転免許を持っている人が同行しないといけない。午前８時１５分に着いてはハ二‐は試験官と去って行った。ハ二‐はとても緊張しているように見えた。本を読んで45分潰すとハ二‐はにこぉっとして戻って来た。試験を受けるのと（＄５０）、免許発行で（＄１７）、＄６７掛かった。日本だと免許を取るのに殆ど強制的に教習場に行かされる。教習上に行くのには大体２８万円程かかる。もし運転がへただともちろん、もっとレッスンを受けないといけないし、もっとお金も掛かる。私は弟に免許をカナダで取ることを強制するつもり!
とにかく、今日から、ハ二‐を真夜中のホッケー試合に運転手として同行しなくてもいいの。やった！でも、たまには見に行くよ♪
I took the day off today and took my honey and the car to the driving test place. In Canada, you take your own car to your driving test, but a person who has a license needs to accompany the learner. We got there at 8:15am and my honey left with the examiner. My honey looked very nervous. I killed 45 minutes by reading a book and then, my honey came back with a grin. It cost $67 for taking the test ($50) and issuing a license card ($17). In Japan, it is almost mandatory to go to a driving school to get a license. It costs about US$2,800 to go to a driving school. If your driving is bad, of course, you need to take more lessons and costs more money. I am going to force my younger brother to get his license in Canada!
Anyway, from today on, I don’t need to drive my honey to midnight, Friday night hockey games. Yippee! But I might go and watch him sometimes♪
昨晩、会社が終わった後ナイトスキーに行った。バンクーバーの北側には2000ｍ級の山が連なっている。ダウンタウンから３０分程車を運転して行けるスキー場が３つもある（サイプレス、グラウス、シーモア）。その中で一番大きいのがCypress Bowl。コースは38本。このスキー場には５レッスン付１ナイターシーズンパスというのがある。１週間に1回ナイタースキーが出来て、その他に５日分レッスン付のデイパスが付いてくる。私達はレンタル付のこのパスを買った。１人約＄300 (約２５０００円）。痛！12月、1月初旬は天気はとても寒かったが、暖かくなりスキー場は当分クローズ。パスは１月に一回だけしか使わなかったのでこの１回のために＄300払ったかと心配になる。スキー場にこのまま雪が降らなかったらお金は返ってきますかと問い合わせたところ、答えはノー！(T_T) 幸運なことに先週末寒くなり雪が降った。昨日はコースはとぉってもアイスぽかったですが、スキー後のビールはおいしかった。（「平日の禁酒はどうなったん？」と誰か言ってるのが聞こえます。ひひひ。）
今日は中国の旧正月。オフィスではお互いの挨拶として、「恭喜發財(Gung Hay Fat Choi)!」（新年おめでとう）と言っていました。
We went skiing last night after work. Vancouver is surrounded by mountains, there are 2000m high mountains on the North Shore. There are 3 ski areas (Cypress, Grouse, Seymour) if you drive about half an hour from downtown. The biggest ski area is the Cypress bowl. It has 38 runs. They sell a one nighter season pass with 5 lessons; you can ski one night a week and 5 day passes with lessons. We bought these season passes with rental and it was about $300 per person. Ouch! The weather was very cold in December and the beginning of January but then it got warm and the cypress was closed for a while. We only managed to use the pass for one day in January and we worried that we’d paid $300 for just the one day. I wrote to the Cypress Bowl whether we can get the money back if it still continued not to snow. The answer is NO! (T_T) Luckily it got colder and snowed last weekend. Phew. But Cyress is still pretty bald, it was sooooo icey last night. But we enjoyed drinking beer afterwards. (I can hear somebody is saying “Hey what happened to your no booze at week nights!?”. Hee hee hee.)
Today is the Chinese New Year. Everybody in the office greeted each other with “Gung Hay Fat Choi!” (Happy New year).
周防正行監督1995年作Shall We Dance?を見た。最近ハリウッドリメークがちょうどリリースされた。この日本オリジナル版はとてもエンタテイニングなコメディでした。ヒロイン役の草刈民代さんはこの映画の後、監督と結婚したそうですね。監督はあるインタビューで、この映画でコミュニケーションの重要性を表したかったと言っています。人は皆違う価値観を持っていて、コミュニケーションはその違いを表現、認識する方法だと。そこから私達はお互い理解しまた違う価値観を産み出す。日本文化は暗黙の了解を好みますがこの映画は自分を表現しましょうと。
まだ見ていない人は見てね。
We watched “Shall We Dance?” which was directed by Masayuki Suo in 1995. Its Hollywood remake was just released recently. This Japanese original was a very entertaining comedy. The heroine, Tamiyo Kusakari, married the director after releasing this film. The director said in an interview that his message in this film is the importance of communication. Everyone has a different value and communication is the way to express and recognize this difference. From there, we will understand each other and we collaborate a new value. Japanese culture prefers to have mutual understandings but this film tells you to express yourself.
I hope you watch this film if you haven’t.

私達の友達はＢＣ州のアルツハイマー協会で働いていて、「思い出ウォーク」というイベントを企画準備した。アルツハイマー病に関わる人々の為にまたはその人たちの思い出に５ｋｍを歩く。このイベントで、私達は歩いている人たちにお水を配ることをお手伝いした。雨の日だったが、私の家族を含む約１０００人？ぐらいの人々が集まった。たくさんの人が私達のお水を飲んでくれたし、みんなフレンドリーな人ばかりだった。道徳的にさせてくれる一日だった。
Our friend works for the Alzheimer Society of BC and she organized an event called “Walk for memories”. It’s a 5 km walk in memory or in honour of someone who has been affected by Alzheimer’s disease. We had an opportunity to help this event by giving water for the walkers. Although it was a rainy day, about 1000 people? turned up for the walk including my family. Lots of people drunk our water and lots of them were very friendly. This day made me feel to be virtuous.

この映画最悪。ハニーがエイリアン、プレデターのファンなので、これを外す訳にはいきませんでした。これは エイリアンＶＳプレデターという漫画が映画化されたもので、オリジナルの映画とは全く関係ありません。どうかみなさん見ないで下さい。
This film sucks! I had to watch it because my honey is a big fan of the Alien and the Predator. This is a film version of catoon called Alien VS Predator. So the story is nothing to do with the originals. Please do not watch this film.

京都に住んでいるいとこがおみやげに持ってきてくれました。てか、彼のお母さん、私の叔母さんから頂いたと言うべきですね。小さい時からいつも素敵なギフトを頂いています。このワカメは新芽で摘まれているので、薄くて、ソフトでいて歯ごたえがあります。色は普通のワカメより薄い色です。よく洗い８分水の中で塩抜き。よく絞っておろししょうがと混ぜたしそドレッシングでサラダ風に食べました。
病み付きになりそうです、この食感。ハ二‐も引くことなくおいしいと食べていました。今晩はこれとミートスパゲティを作りました。
My cousin in Kyoto brought this to me as a souvenir. Well, I should say it’s from his mother, my aunt. She has always given me nice gifts since my childhood. This seaweed was picked young so it’s thin, soft, and crunchy. Its colour is lighter than normal seaweed. I washed it thoroughly and soaked it for 8 minutes. Drained it well and ate it like salad with grated ginger mixed in Shiso (Japanese herb) dressing.
Its texture is going to be addictive. My honey didn’t get awkward with this food and said it’s oishi. I made this salad and spaghetti Bolognese tonight.
土曜日、リッチモンドにある中国オリエンタル系モール、「ヤオハンセンター」に行った。特にＴ＆Ｔスーパーマーケットや日本の本屋さんによく行く。女性用トイレでこのサインを見つけた。
On Saturday I went to the Yaohan Centre, a Chinese-oriented mall in Richmond BC. I go there quite a lot, particularly for the T&T supermarket and the Japanese book store. I found this fantastic sign in the ladies washroom.

私が住んでいるスタンレーパーク周辺はWest Endと呼ばれています。スタンレーパークは４００ヘクタールの面積で、東京ドーム約８５個分の広さ。この公園には何百年もたった原生林がそのまま残されています。写真右側の森がスタンレーパーク。緑で囲った部分がWest Endです。
The area I live in is called the Westend. Stanley park is 400 hectares, which is about 85 of the Tokyo domes. Some trees in the park are few hundred years old. In the right hand side of this picure is the park and the area highlighted in light green is the West End.

こんなに大きい公園があるので、West Endにはりすくん達がたくさん住んでいます。昨日、母が家に来て、あまりのりすの多さにシャッターを切ってしまったそうです。
Because there are so many squirrels in this park, my mother could not resist the opportunities to take pictures of the squirrels living in the Westend.
